Making Apartments Work

How do you make apartments you build or download from the Gallery work like the ones that come with the game iterations?
  • You mean for example if you replace the Feng's apartment with one from the gallery? They usually just work for me. Now I have a lot of my own "apartments" for which I clump families together and use the door lock feature to limit certain sims to certain units. But they all share funds etc as if they lived in a house together. I wish we could build apartments as a lot trait! They had that in an earlier version of the game, Sims 2 maybe?
  • You cannot build your own, you can only edit the ones already there, and even those have limitations :)

Do you mean how you can change a whole apartment with one from the gallery? Like for example an apartment from City Living?

You save the whole apartment as a room, that's how people on the gallery seem to do it. You often have to add missing walls back and download several rooms to replace the whole apartment.

I was hoping that the complete new build apartment buildings could be set up to be like the apartments that game with the game packs. Complete builds not rooms to replace existing apartment rooms (which so many people do not designate which existing apartment the room goes to)

We cannot have an apartment building sadly, however you can utilize the roommates system from University to make it work

I have the University pack but have not used it yet, except for some clothes. Is there a link to instructions on this roommate system?

Click on the Cellphone there will be an option for "Place an Advertisement for Roommates". Then day per day new sims will go to you and be a "candidate" for roommate. Once you chose who you wanted to be a roommate, lock the doors to say to the parts of the building you want only your sim to have access to and vice versa. That way you can keep them out. If you want to visit your neighbor roommate just unlock the door and your sim can enter.

One cool thing is that when my sim have a new roommate, on an empty surface in the room that they are going to sleep, they will unpack their own objects that belong to them. My sim roommate has a lamp and a couple of books.

No, a total build of an apartment building, not the replacements for the apartments that come with the game packs.
  • Nope. Can't build your own like we were able to in Sims3. I would love to build townhomes & duplexes, etc, but we're stuck with only the apartments we're given to customize and even then you need to work around a lot of things that can't be changed.

    What Ellupelluellu said.

Also the exact apartment (room) needs to fit the same one.
However, you can download rooms to fit into an apartment, just like a normal lot.
