Making my game more challenging - ideas?

Hi all! I'm a big fan of the homeless/rags to riches challenges, but they get too easy too fast. So I was trying to think of new ways to challenge myself. For example, I was thinking I can't sell anything, everything has to go into the household inventory, if I don't want it on the lot anymore. Or maybe I can only sell things sim-to-sim via the appropriate routes. So if I don't want that old TV, maybe I need to get a retail store called "Weekend Flea Market" or something to be able to do so.

Do you have more ideas I haven't heard of yet? My secret goal is to finally finish a Legacy challenge, but I get bored so fast, so ideas of how to keep the struggle interesting through the generations would be super appreciated. I'm not a fan of the structured story-telling legacy challenges, because I like my sims to be able to tell their own stories, instead of Gen 1: Business, Gen 2: Artist, type stuff.

Thanks so much for your thoughts!

  • You could have a look at this thread; it has some great ideas:

Making your game more realistic could make it more challenging.

I'm reading through it already. There have been some great ideas, you're definitely right. <3 I especially like the 'no hand of god' idea of not cleaning up after them, etc.
  • TheSimSupply did an "extreme" rag to riches where items could only be sold if they were sim-to-sim, not directly from the inventory to an "invisible" person. In other words, the sim could only sell at a retail store, or to begin with, at the Flea Market or with the yard sale table. Looked like a good challenge!

I loved that series so much, and that's where I got the idea from. I think the tables are fixed now, so here's hoping.
  • In my rags to riches I only allowed my sim to dig rocks. And she could only do it on the weekends. Not only did she have so much time to meet new people but the game was more challenging too! She was a teen also so after she got back from school on Fridays she had to finish her homework quickly cause I swear her weekends were so busy haha
  • - Don't use cheats.
    - Only let your Sim level up to a certain career level (for example if you want your Sim to be a Caterer only allow them to get to either level 3 or level 6 in the culinary career track).
    - Don't let teens get jobs.
    - Have Sims retire as soon as they hit elder status.
    - Don't allow Sims to make money on the side (painting, gardening, etc.) or only allow them to have one money making hobby that they don't do a ton of.

These are just some things I do in my game to make it more challenging. I'm very much a realistic player though and usually have the Sims storylines planned out when they are little, lol.
