Can anyone tell me how to find the original maxis created sims in the gallery? One of the sims they created for get together died all of a sudden & I want him back but I'm having trouble finding any of those sims on the gallery.

When in the Gallery at the search bar click the drop down menu to EA Account ID then type Maxis.

Are you looking for a premade sim or a sim that was created for promo material? Premades usually aren't on the Maxis gallery accounts, but some community members upload them.

They used to be on the origin account MaxisCreator_01 but if you click on that account you will get to the maxis account where those sims seem to be no longer be there. Are you looking for a premade sim or a sim that was created for promo material? Premades usually aren't on the Maxis gallery accounts, but some community members upload them.

I was looking for one of the sims from the household "Roomies" I think it was called. I didn't really want an uploaded version from another simmer, I was hoping for the original from maxis. So I guess it would be a premade sim.

You won't lose your current game unless you save over it. A new save will always make a new file. :)
There's two ways to save a household.
The easiest is through household view, where you can locate the household and save from there.

I don't know if your interested or not but I just finished loading up the CAS premade sims that the December 2018 patch added. I gave them the names that Sim Guru named, and I picked traits for them that fit their back story. I went ahead and fixed their other outfits, and no CC was used. I'll put a link to them in the spoiler so as not to take up too much space.
