TS2, can't play without a ton of Pescado's mods or it drives me insane with how many things just don't work quite the way I feel they should. TS3, the NRAAS suite is practically a requirement to make the game even functional.
In TS4, I use MCCC to add story progression for inactive households, to keep the world feeling alive but I could play without it...I'd just go back to being rotational like how I played TS2. I do prefer not to though so use MCCC. The mods I feel are really required for me in TS4 are the various Bienchen and LittleMsSam's mods that fix the 100+ 'annoying things' in the game, similar to how Pescado's fix the annoyances in TS2.
While I am definitely a huge fan of Sims games...there hasn't been one since the original that I would have continued playing long-term if it wasn't for mods.
