I have neighborhood stories enabled, but have aging off on all my played households so none of the Sims I care about are dying off and they can pause in time while I go play a different household. If I get tired of a household I play with, I may set it to unplayed and let them have stories on, but customize it so they can't move out or die accidentally so they're still where I left them in case I change my mind.
One thing I always customize for all Sims everywhere, though, is no adopting horses unless you live in Chestnut Ridge. No more horses in San Myshuno please! 😁 But I do love checking the neighborhood stories on the mailbox (though I hate that the friendship updates never have last names), or going to Manage Worlds and check out what's happening to the "big" families like the Goths, the Langraabs, etc. I love watching how they grow and change without me doing anything.
