I'm really enjoying the new freelancer option - it definitely added to gameplay in a way that registering with the Ministry of Labour did not. I don't like active careers because I have to leave everyone else in the house on self-care, and the one time I did follow my scientist to work, I was rather annoyed with the tasks she was given. Ordinary rabbit-hole careers can be useful for getting a Sim out of the house when I want to concentrate on other Sims, and I like playing them through just to see what stages the career will reach and get the unlocks.
The freelance careers are entirely different - it's not a repeat of the same actions for every gig (like the programming side-job), and it feels a bit more purposeful than having a Sim sit there for ages programming a game or writing a book. They did a nice job with this - if it had come with a pack, it's something that I would have felt was worth spending money, and it seems to be fairly unbuggy (is that a word?).
