New Laptop Adventures and the Fate of Sona Ali

Hey Simmers,

I just wanted to share a little update about my tech situation. A few days ago, I finally got a new laptop! My old one was really falling apart, and it was time for an upgrade. It all started when one of the screw holders came loose early on, which led to a broken hinge from all the repeated opening and closing. Recently, I noticed that some keys stopped working properly, and then I ran into a major issue where the PC wouldn’t boot because of a faulty RAM slot. Thankfully, there’s a second slot, so I managed to get it running again for now.

Another reason I decided to get a new laptop is that my old one couldn’t upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11 due to its CPU limitations. With Windows 10 support ending on October 14, 2025, I knew I had to make a move before it became obsolete.

I’m keeping my old laptop around for one specific purpose: updating Sona Ali whenever there’s a patch that fixes certain issues (like the infamous "get caught cheating" task). It’s become somewhat of a ritual for me! I’ll continue using it for that until either Windows 10 support ends or the laptop finally gives up on me—whichever comes first.

Has anyone else been in a similar situation? How do you handle transitioning between devices while still needing access to older software? Would love to hear your thoughts!

p.s. I could install Sims 4 on new PC but this seems too much of a hassle just to check on occasional updates (note that I play game on console)

I am a bit confused. You are talking about installing sims on PC but at the very end you say you play on console? If the game with Sona Ali is on PC, then I would definitely save a copy of that save game on the new laptop.

When I switched laptops, I moved all my sims save files, mods and tray folder to the new one. I kept the game installed on the old one but in the end I never used it. Reinstalling wasn't a hassle. Just install the EA app and then install sims 4 (all DLC you have will transfer). Moving the sims folder in my documents was easy enough.

Should you install sims on the new pc, be careful with one drive. Windows will probably suggest using one drive but that will mess up your game.

Game with Sona Ali (and all DLC) is on console but because I can't check game/household files there I had to get PC version as well (free base game) and I'm not interested in installing game again on new PC just in case a future update fixes one of the few rewards I yet have to unlock. Technically all I need is xml files extracted from BG+DLC as well as an option to download my household from the gallery so I can reupload her on MTS.

new PC is a Surface Go laptop, btw

Well, if you don't actually play the game on the new laptop, you can use your old pc to download her from the gallery. If that ever stops working, you can still install the game on the new laptop at that moment in the future , right?
