New to Cluttering - Help!

I have what I would could only assume to be a major noob issue while trying to venture out into creating builds for the Gallery. I'm usually very lazy when creating builds for my personal game but I've been so inspired lately and I just have to make some builds! (Would love to showcase them eventually) I've been watching some tutorial's using the OMSP Red Shelf and just general cluttering tutorials.. yet I'm still stuck. Many tutorials and speed builds show someone placing clutter items on, for example, a counter, and dragging the counter away without the items moving with the counter. They stay floating as if the counter were still underneath it. How does one do this?! I use a Mac but I'm not too sure that has much to do with my issue (or it one hundred percent could be).

To do that (with moveobjects on) you place the item on the counter, move the counter out and then just move the item. The item stays at the same level. To fine tune where you want the item hold the Alt key (or Mac equivalent) to move it around freely.
