I don't think you can start fires with the cauldron though it should be allowed.
I've already adjusted though.
My sims will just zip off to the magical realm and use the cauldrons there. Now I have another reason to go there.
They will store extra potions and ingredients in the room of requirement and leave them behind for anyone who follows.
Even if I don't have magical sims in the dorms, I should have a nice supply of useful potions to give to my muggle sims. :)
Make sure you add one of the portals to the realm in a prominent place.
