Agreed with the OP, pretty much after finally learning what "Off the grid" and "canning" were, they really sounded like a Farm theme. The biggest curiosity I have for "off the grid" is...would such a feature disable cell phones? Cell phones (since the sims 3 era) have been deeply integrated into the games. It was one of the reasons (minus a car disable) why a lot of simmers we're disappointed that they couldn't create a medieval, or simply a really rural area. It just broke immersion for some.
I'm curious if they could actually disable it in this iteration due to the "off the grid" talk.
Actually in real life we buy what are called solar trees that we use to recharge cell phones - so my guess is no - it is not an issue. You have to remember anything that works on batteries or electric power can use solar power. Solar power is stored in cells - big round thingies - lol so on those days there is clouds and less sun we never run out of power. Even during storms when people have power failure - there is no such thing with solar power. My neighbor powers a huge farm and two other houses and still gets paid by the power company for giving them extra power. So definitely not an issue with anything that needs batteries or electricity. It is why most of us prefer electric cars. It is obvious here how little many people know about solar power and going green seeing some of the statements I have seen on these eco friendly forums.
It is really the best way to go and at the same time save our planet so our world has a future. I think many people need to educate themselves on real off the grid living. It's not hippy and most are not farms although all of us grow our own organic foods and herbs - believe me it is very different then the old hippy movement to "get back to basics" it is the way of the future and the most progressive technological field out there. I am really surprised so many people know so little about really going green.
Here;s one type of solar trees for phones - http://netdna.walyou.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/Solar-tree-charger.jpg
These are the kinds of places we live in -

Ooh I see what you mean. I get it..but for the most part I never really heard the specific name for it besides 'going green' (off the grid was a bit new to me). So thank you. Though I know it in some form. But...darn...a true medieval/old country that had absolutely no phones, or cellular/technically period in terms of gamplay would have interested me a bunch more.
Like the ability to "Use candles and the beautiful moonlight" (as my grandpa would say but in Italian lol) instead of solar power. Though I get that isn't apart of eco living and "off the grid".
Still I guess that's the type of game-play i'd defiantly get behind. This one I'm not so sure. But I hope anyone who wants it has their wish come true. Not to mention regardless I can still see it in a farming pack.
Unfortunately Maxis is not known to give us actual farming packs - as the first time we got anything farming wise was in Sims 3 Store content which was from the Salt Lake City Store Team and not the team that works on the regular Sims unfortunately. So add that to the fact there will not be big animals in pets - I don't see the promise of such a pack - we have been waiting for one with every rendition and so far in 17 years we have not had a farming pack - I don't see anything that encourages such a thing in Sims 4 - especially for such small worlds and small lots. The Farm from the store with all the needed out buildings, barns etc require a 64 x64 lot for every farm lot - so people are wishing for something I can't see happening.
