It would be hard not to get attached to Megan or Rhett. I haven't raised any infants, but I get attached to basically all Sims born in-game in the household I play. I use custom ages (which are normal with a few days added to some life stages to account for YA Sims going to university). I play so slowly that there's just no way I could play on long.
I think the infants and toddlers are cute, but those stages are so intense and lacking in independence that I'm always happy when my Sims grow out of them. I love seeing them develop stronger personalities and interests, interact with others, etc.
I raised all the Sims in the image from their in-game births except the two holding the toddler.
My Sims have lots of gatherings and holidays where they invite various members of the extended family who have moved out or descendants. I like to see what MCCC has put them to. I think all these event make it hard not to get attached but at the same time, it would get dull for me if the same Sims experienced the same holidays again and again without aging.

My gameplay follows no rules (except aging on and no non-build or non-cosmetic cheats) and I find that helps me stay engaged. My Sims move out of the main home when I feel like it and in some cases they stay way past their YA birthdays. If they happen to inherit an immortal trait, then there's no rush at all and I really take my time with them.
