My dog had the skittish trait and I had him from puppy and when he turned elder I adopted a kitten. I'm 99% sure he was afraid of the kitten because he would always be in the red when the kitten was home and the same when it grew up so I got rid of the thing and he was happy again.
Kind of annyoying but I just had my sim call the sadness hotline to get over it.
