I always think of you when I hear about a huge update, @GalacticGal because of the many times you've had to restart Erik's story.
I have 2 Sims 4 folders in my documents folder: one is vanilla and the other is modded. I do this by adding "(dot)MODDED." So it would look like this The Sims 4.MODDED and The Sims 4.VANILLA. When I want to build, I use the vanilla folder. I just remove the (dot)VANILLA. It takes some getting used to to remember to change it, the game will regenerate another folder if you don’t change, but I find it super helpful.
This is how I keep my save files completely mod free and I've done it for a few years now. I got this idea from XUrbanSimsX on YouTube. If I can find the video, I'll post a link so you can get a better understanding of what I mean.
With this method, you could copy the save to the vanilla and continue to play with your favorite Sims. Of course the Road to Fame mod won't be there but it could help you do a test run of other ideas you may have.
Edit: I found the video.

I do believe I have employed a little bit of this, inasmuch as I have used a name for the save and put _New behind it or something of that nature. I will most certainly separate my current save so that I can either play it vanilla or use it to test a mod (RTF) to see if it's even viable. Thanks for this. You have further inspired me. :)
