Open worlds discussion

It's been really hard for the Sims 4 to keep my attention for long periods of time because it's not an open world.

That is the sole issue with the game for me. I just hate the loading screens and more than anything, I hate that if I take one sim out, I have no control over the rest of the family.

This has hugely affected the amount of sims that I play with at a time as well as the amount of time that I spend on a game before getting tired of it.

Has anyone else experienced this?
Is there any hope for the Sims to become an open world again?

For me, TS4's problem is worse. There are a few Sims present before my Sim arrives, true. Yet, they're all lined up on the sidewalk as if they're waiting for the bus. This, among other things, bothered me so much that I stopped playing TS4. Now, I only use it when I'm in the mood to continue a story that I started there. I use the pose player mod and I set up screenshots to go along with the story. When I want to play a game, I go back to TS3.

This is one of my pet peeves. Interestingly, with my game, most of the base-game community lots load with sims already at the lot and using the objects which is how it should be. However, every other world that has come with a pack this doesn't occur and they are all lined up at the entrance and stand there for a minute or two before going off to do their own thing.
  • One of the things that I’m dreading about Sims 5 is them bringing back open worlds. I personally don’t like it at all.

I don’t mind loading screens at all. My Sims are always out and about.

My biggest complaint is worlds that I feel should be more populated and have more to do in between lots. Tartosa is the best example of this. Beautiful world but not much to do and no sims about. Stalls even close early. That breaks my immersion more than a loading screen.

Interesting. I never paid attention to which lots do this and which don't. I just knew it happened sometimes, and not others. I am going to have to observe this now. If that is the case, and it is only in the added worlds, I wonder why it happens that way.

I've actually been doing some further testing on this, repaired my game, removed mods so it's all vanilla. Gym's and libraries in all worlds seem to be ok. Lounges differ, base game worlds are ok (sims are standing in the lot or sitting), had some problems with San Myshuno and Del Sol Valley. Bars also differ based on world. I've had problems with onsen lots, restaurants and retail as well. The problem also is more likely to occur if a sim invites you to a lot, sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't it's very strange :/

Ahh, interesting. After posting above, I was trying to remember where I notice it most and I did think it wasn't something I noticed on my gym in Windenburg, but at my cafe, and my restaurant, both in San Myshuno, it always does it. I also don't think it does it in my Spa in Windenburg, but I can't remember that as clearly. I will be checking this out tomorrow in different places for sure. It is odd that it seems to have many variables rather than lot type, or world specific, which is what I would imagine it would be.

  • I loved the open world. I just wish TS3 had TS4 sims.
If the Sims 5 isn't open world, I might as well stay with The Sims 4, unless they give the sims a lot more personality and depth.
    It will probably be multi-player.
  • I just wish we could modify the common areas in each neighborhood. I am not a fan of open world because rotational play was very hard to manage without a mod. Even then it was bananas. I also HATED that the worlds were not connected. Each expansion I was starting over in a different world with a different sim. I never really connected to my sims in sims 3.

It's funny because I loved the open world of TS3 at the time and hated it at first when it was taken away from us. But now I prefer the loading screens to the downsides of the open world.

I'm not even too fussed about having open neighbourhoods anymore - unless it is a community area. It would be nice to be able to designate an area as community and have that be open so that all shops and entertainment could be visited without loading screens but I cannot see a way for them to do that unless it was EA-designated districts.

TS2 does that. A community lot is a community lot, some being single purpose of any kind and some multi-purpose. One building on a lot or several, one can mix to heart's content, and all will be fully functional with attendants as necessary. There are only 4 food stalls, but all come preloaded with attendant, no hiring necessary. BTW, a bowling alley is a bowling alley, no need to have it part of a bar or something else to function. A much more flexible system overall.
