Despite all the hype, I am still very much looking forward to Seasons! I like the way the worlds look in the trailers, but maybe that's just because I live somewhere we get constant dusting of snow during the winter...so I am pretty used to flat slow in real life  And I am super pumped to see the new gameplay and calendar/holiday system! This is something that has never been done before in a previous series so I am pretty excited to see how this plays out.
As I've said on many threads, I really enjoy the Sims 4. It works for me and my style of gameplay, and I've spent countless hours having fun with it. But, with that said, I know the gameplay is definitely not perfect...
I can understand why some simmers may be disappointed. For many, the Sims is an immersive game, where the look and feel of the world around them is critical to maximizing their connection with the gameplay. Especially for those who come from places where they have lots of snow in real life...or those who live in places where there is no snow, and, through the sims, they get to experience the weather elements vicariously.
Personally, why I think Sims 4 aggrevates so many simmers is because it tends to stifle creativity. We are kind of locked in to what EA sees in their own heads, which often does not align to how we envision our own worlds to look and feel. Simmer's cannot design their own neighborhoods, are stuck with a limited amount of lots, building tools and options are limited, and, with a lack of patterns and color wheels, there is only so much flexibility for customization. So, basically, Simmers never get to quite fully express themselves. And since many of the sims behave and act in similar manners, there is just a lot of sameness to the worlds.
At the end of the day, I think the fundamental technology that was chosen for sims 4 has backed EA into a corner. And sadly, ladies and gentlemen, I think we are stuck with it. Because I have a feeling it's either this or nothing  At this point, I am not even sure if there will ever be a Sims 5 in PC form?!?
You just summed up practically 3/4ths of my problem with The Sims 4. That's exactly how I feel. Like my creativity was taken away, my sims are forced to live in a world I don't care for in a more cultural societal type of way, I feel limited in all aspects except the physical design of my sim, but then to top it all off my sim all have the same singular personality no matter their traits. Snow depth, should they add it, may make Seasons better but no Sims 4 pack is ever going to make all of that better. Every disappointment I've had with the packs up to this point is just like adding sprinkles on a sundae I'm not really into. I'll let them try to sell me on the supposed greatness of this new sundae but I know what I like.
I agree, for The Sim 4 at least it is basically this or nothing and The Sims 5 is questionable at best but I'm still trying to be hopeful. One of the things I love about The Sims series is that we all play differently and that's something that I think should always be in consideration. Not every player played in modern day and some players versions of modern day are different to what it stereotypically is. Not all players are going to want their sims attached to a cell phone. Not all players are going to want their sims to have an easy breezy life. Some players like messy and complicated and some like balance. So no, not every one is going to want deep snow, is going to take advantage of more customizable features, or build lots and worlds all the time but having the option is better than not having it at all. More options should be on the table but it feels like they missed the boat this time around for some reason(s).
Honesty also goes a long way as well which is why I was happy SimGuruGrant said something. I hope they keep up the communication. It elevated my respect for them a little bit. I may not get the answer I hope for but I'd rather have them be open and honest with us than them not say anything at all. The Sims 4 has had enough of those moments and the built up frustration that ensues because of them.
Well said! Agreed!
And I agree that it is quite evident that there are just so many different ways to play the Sims, and that's what makes this community so interesting and also challenging. Some simmers are more into creating stories and enjoying virtual roleplay, some are into more realistic and serious gameplay, while others are into building and fashion design...the list goes on and on. And I guess that's why we will always have those who are happy and those who are not with the release of each pack. My hope is that each type of simmer gets some of what they are looking for out of each release of sims 4, but, sadly, it does not seem as though any one pack will ever make everyone happy at the same time.
To me, the appearance of snow doesn't matter as much, as long as I get sufficient gameplay. But I do respect and sympathize with other simmers if that's important to them, and I hope that once all the details of the pack are released, maybe there will be enough features for them to want to buy the pack after all.
Four years into the game and I'm still waiting for spiral or L-shaped stairs, sliding glass doors, trash compactors, cars and garage doors, and elevators...hopefully someday...
