I bite the bullet and installed the update. Everything is fine. I installed it, restarted my computer and after restarting the game twice got the 'load game' button to work and played one of my saves for a little, no problems. Maybe it's the computers we are playing on that make a difference. I'm playing on an Alienware with a SSD and 14GB of RAM.
