I like to mix everything together and new stuff eventually gets incorporated into my gameplay. When I make new sims I try to give them new traits, careers, hobbies different from other sims I've played and they are spread out in all the worlds, and sometimes they meet each others and date each others. Maybe you need to play more, one month a year is not enough if there are 2-3 packs released every year.
