Genetics are hit and miss in this game. Often times the child would look like a copy of one of the parents and have nothing from the other. As the OP says, "smaller" features such as freckles are completely ignored by the game genetics, which is a shame. It also often does weird combinations that are extremely unusual irl. Specifically with interracial couples where the child would pick up for example just the blonde hair and bright blue eyes of the father and the rest would be a copy of the very dark skinned mother. Yes, this can happen irl, but it is very rare and so should be in the game.
And when it comes to Vampires and Aliens, is even worse.
It is a shame because on the rare occasion where it works, it works pretty well.
I once had Bella Goth and Bob Pancakes have a kid together and they had twins. You can tell that they both have a lot of their mother and a lot of their father:
