I personally never have this problem since I typically only play with a single sim and I direct her on how to cook so I always choose single meal, but I've read enough threads and twitter posts to know that a vast majority of people experience this issue.
It's pretty shameful on EA/Maxis's part to continue to allow this wastefulness to continue.
