I have removed grills from nearly all my houses for this very reason. And because I discovered that I never use them anyway, even when I'm in full control of the situation. Guess I only ever placed them to fill up useless space to begin with.
But yeah, sims' priorities when it comes to food are all over the place and make no sense. Even vegetarians will sometimes grill things they can't even eat, or get meaty leftovers from the fridge when meatless alternatives are available, and then complain that I'm making them eat stuff they don't like.
