Point of preorder?
What's the point of pre ordering a game? I always buy from origin and I never have issues with it. I don't want problems with pets though, could they run out of digital copies?

The digital age was a godsend for big game studios.
Not only do they sell at the same price (or more) as physical copies even without the previous cost of packaging/shipping, they also keep the old habit of preordering alive, which used to be to ensure you had a game when copies were limited, and now just means get money in advance.
And they don't even have to bother waiting for a finished, polished game, they can give whatever and patch what's broken.
In this case pre-ordering doesn't mean anything else than pre-paying. You don't have any boni from it. You are just paying in advance for a game expansion that might still be unfinished (talking from experience regarding The Sims).
But this doesn't mean that I cannot understand those who pre-order the pack, especially since Cats & Dogs is always highly demanded by the players. You are looking forward to it and feel good about buying it as soon as possible, because it makes you feel like you already have it.
Nevertheless, these arguments are not rational if you are completely honest. You won't have it until release day because you'll only get a digital "copy". There is no reason to fear that you won't get the expansion (on time) after release as it can't sell out obviously. Furthermore, "controlling your money" is also possible if you do not pre-order. I mean, you can order the game whenever you like - except you feel like you MUST have it on release day. But that's not true. You might WANT to have it then, but to want something doesn't mean you MUST have it. You could also buy it later or wait until the EP is on sale. THAT's controlling your money.
