Poll: Do you use mods in your game? Discuss.

I'm an on and off player and I have been for years. When I played Sims 2 and 3, I was modded to the hilt. But in Sims 4, I started playing mostly mod-free for a few reasons:
One, broken mods left irritating glitches for me to view in the character creation and I -hated- it. My OCD was TRIGGERED. (It’s a pain to seek out a destroy when you have a lot of aesthetic mods!)
Second, after an update, I've had my game crashed and buggy. With more than a few mods, finding the culprit(s)- it’s a whole thing. (Maybe there's an easy way I don't know about?)
Third, there's the fear of contracting a web disease. I do not want to deal with viruses, malware, etc. so I'm a little shy about downloads. I've had ugly experiences in the past. Now that I have a computer that I really care about, I'm very wary. (Yes, I have ad-block. Yes, I have good security software. Maybe I'm being paranoid? I dunno, I'm hoping you guys will tell me!)

It wasn’t a tough switch to make. After playing with so many mods for so long, initially, it was actually very refreshing to switch back to a simpler experience and enjoy the game in its basic, true form. And, once I began creating…well, I like for things to look like they go together. I’m kind of all-or-nothing that way; what I start with I tend to stick with. So, no mods in 4 for me.

That is until recently… I had another one of my long breaks only to return and start playing regularly again. (Like I do.) This time, I started dabbling in the occult! Ψ(`∀´ )ノ This led me to dl MC Command in order to copy/paste appearances, I needed to get my aliens' disguises to generally be a close variation of their actual appearance. (I investigated thoroughly first. Srsly, am I paranoid?) I quickly found that it added a lot of control and POWAH!...*cough*...I mean, power... to my game. I started to remember what I liked about mods in Sims 2 and 3.

TLDR: I'm feeling mod-curious again! I've seen some pretty cool stuff on YouTube and I'd like to safely experiment, and maybe start a whole new world with a completely different look and feel. I'd love to get advice from current players who are more experienced with what's out there right now. Will you help me out?

SO... what’s your style? And, if you don’t mind, please comment about what you personally recommend. Which sites do you think are the best? Are they free? Are they safe?

(PS. I posted this to general discussion rather than to the mods threads on purpose. I want the feedback of the general pop.)

EDIT: Please consider the second option to just read "Quality of Life". I wish I could take out the phrase, "cheating at cheating" in retrospect. I think that's kind of a dirty word to a lot of people and doesn't reflect their intentions. Unfortunately, I can't edit the poll questions. So, just roll with me on this! Using the game to conveniently progress aging or adjust relationships etc to fit the needs of your story is what I'd call quality of life. Also, anything that makes the game run more smoothly.

  • I tend to use mods that fix bugs in the game and allow me to control the sim world more. I’ve also added some mods to add new lot types for story telling. I like some of the game play mods but I haven’t used them much yet.

As for cc, I use waaaay too much. It’s 98% maxis match, but there are a TON of good mm creators on tumblr. I have pretty solid anti virus software & I use adfly skipper and a bunch of other chrome extensions. So no problem so far.
  • I didn't play The Sims 2 and The Sims 3 with mods, but now I've gone crazy with them in The Sims 4. GB and GB of content, mostly CAS, about five collections of Build/Buy Mode objects, and about 200 Script Mods. I mostly play around with different aspirations, careers, and mods that change the chance of occult births, and attraction probabilities between my Sims.

Mods I absolutely can't play without: UI Cheats Extension Mod, MC Command Center, Pregnancy Overhaul Mod, Slice of Life Mod, and Preschool Mod. <3
  • I very, very rarely use mods, but I have briefly used custom poses for screenshots and MCCC to copy the appearance of a sim I have created using play with genetics onto a sim born in game. I prefer to play vanilla.
  • Not until the game is finished. I can't be bothered updating them.
  • There is not a sim version I played except maybe Sims 1 and not had a mod because something is always broken.

Sims 2 I had mainly hair, clothes, etc I had to get a DMA hire assassin mod to kill off townies because they never died and I needed the world to be refreshed with new townies after a few generations...lol

Sims 3 well you basically cannot play that game without NRAAS. Cars stuck, routing issues, etc A nightly cleanup of the world was necessary...LOL

Sims 4 now this is the first time I had to get mods to enhance the gameplay and make the game more risky for my Sims. This game is just too easy. All sims could easily die of old age....BORING. This game needs way more consequences and I am not talking about laughing to death either. Also, they need to add fears, an attraction system, favorites and subjects they like to talk about and this could help with making friends faster with like-minded sims or make it harder with Sims who are not interested(They should visible not want to talk to each other. I would love if one sim held their hand up like a talk to the hand LOL please no stupid moodlet with some emotion that is the same as everything else) Make the Sims more unique. This is why it is failing so hard nine emotions making all the sims the same.
  • I wasn’t a mod player too.. always wanting to avoid crashes.. but I was always interested in realistic gameplays.. so I got into MC command for setting individual age span. Like roburky meaningful stories. I always read reviews and I don’t have way to much stuff..
  • I use a lot of Maxis Match CAS items, but never got any build/buy cc unless there was something I truly wanted in my game. I started off with MC Command Center, as I didn't want my favorite sims to be culled, and I want to keep the relationships intact. This mod also keeps the worlds from becoming empty.

Then there's Become a Sorcerer, the mod I still use, as it adds to the Spellcaster life state and makes it more interesting. I use Meaningful Stories and Have Some Personality please, as they make the Sims seem more alive. NPC Control is a must, as it uses the sims that were already made, instead of letting the game create random sims with weird names and egregious fashion choices. And lastly, I use the Simulation Lag Fix to stop the time from going back and forth while my sims sleep.

For storytelling, I use Poseplayer and Twisted Mexi's T.O.O.L mod. I can't imagine playing the game without mods and cc.
  • Yep, can't play the game without mods lol. I use quality of life mods, but I wouldn't say for cheating. I use mods to stop annoying autonomy like constantly taking out the trash or getting water and Personality Please, Meaningful Stories, Love & Hate, and Simology, etc. mods to create the illusion of my sims having actual, individual, unique personalities
