I don't entirely disagree. We can only guess as to the upper-management's motives, but I'm sure you're right, some of it is very likely going to be them trying to get "brownie points" as you put it.
But the way I see it, and I can't really see it any other way... is does it really matter? Including lesbian and gay options in the game can't be anything else other than a good thing. Spreading positive awareness is always good, regardless of their intentions.
