Problem at the gym

Several times today I was at the Movers and shakers gym. I set my sim to run endurance run on treadmill, and then sped up time. After a while, I was ready to send my sim to the shower, so I hit pause, and the game did not pause. My sim, and every sim in the gym appeared stuck doing whatever it is they were doing, and time is still sped up, but nothing is getting accomplished. Tried to save, could not save. Tried to exit, could not exit. It was in some kind of frozen state. I ctrl alt del out to task manager, end task, and try again.

This time I decided not to speed up time during the workout, and that seemed to go fine for a few times. Then one time a few game days later, my sim got out of the shower at the gym, used the toilet, and and then went to wash his hands, and that's when he was stuck washing his hands, and every other sim was stuck doing what they were doing, showering, talking, working out, whatever.

This problem only started today. I haven't played in a little while, but most recently added the growing together expansion, and today there was a patch download, but I don't know if it came out today, or if I am just getting it today because I haven't played in like a month.

This is very frustrating, as it has never happened before. I tried searching the help center for this problem, but was unable to find it. Please help, someone.
