I do the same thing!!! Its a lot more fun to do this rather than stuck spamming the same interactions at home. I've even been making generic lots in each neighborhood/world with "office" suites so that my sims with the work from home option can travel there to do there thing. Besides its fun to covert an old ugly build into a better one. I took one of the Karaoke bars in City Living (I think its Waterside Warble-the one where there 's individual little rooms with a karaoke set in each and a huge second floor with nothing but empty space.
Back when we got Ecoliving, I set it to Generic and deleted all the karaoke sets and then went a bit overboard with decorating. There's an office for my lawyers, engineers, civil engineers, stylists, and a daycare area etc on the second floor.
Then I have some more fun store fronts on the first floor including a bakery, coffee shop, brewery (room with a juicing machine), salon, and a laundromat. There's a lot of items from the Ecoliving pack to do outside such as the market place tables.
I like to send my sims there to complete their work from home duties. Its also fun for club hangouts and date nights.
