I know it's a bug and mighty annoying, but it can be turned around and used for story-telling sometimes too. I had my Sim's love life all sorted out - she was going to marry her first love Barrett. I had her propose three times, and each time Barrett, the muppet, refused (his loss; my Sim is a sweetie). So, after she'd got over her humiliation, she called up a cute guy she'd dated a bit as a teen. They hit it off really well, and a few Sim weeks later my Sim (and I!) plucked up the courage to propose - he accepted immediately and they're now inseparable. So, what started off as a really aggravating situation has worked out really well!
