Question about growing plants in basements

OK, so I know you can grow things in planters and tubs in a basement, but I was wondering if you lay down the grass tiles and MOO the plants into the basement instead, will they grow? I was thinking sunken garden covered with a glass roof accessible from the living room of your stylish underground house in Oasis Springs rather than dodgy basement grow room under a run down camelback in Willow Creek

  • How do you get a glass roof on a basement? Can you hide or cut a hole in the terrain somehow?

I don’t think you need a glass roof to grow plants inside, I have grown them in apartments.

If you click on the basement and go up to ground level its higlighted if you click on the edge again the option to remove the roof will become available. And you get an open basement area. You can have multiple open levels, like a 2 or 3 level missile silo.

@SheriSim57 I know that, that part is purely aesthetic, but IIRC you could grow garden plants in the ground in a basement in 3, as far as I can tell you have to use planters in 4.

Tried growing a garden in planter boxes in a basement. Most of the plants died off after a while, I think it was grapes that held on but never grew fruit. When I moved them up to the surface they almost immediately started growing fruit and thriving.

Biggest surprise of my basement garden experiment was that the mushrooms all died.

@JustMeAlb hmm; I've done basement gardens several times & have never had any plants die. Though if I remember right, the last time I did I got "failed to germinate" messages when trying to plant in a planter pot or box. Had to plant them outside *then* go in to build mode to move them to the basement. Was a right pain.

The case I mentioned could have been related to a glitch I've seen occasionally where a garden will grow to full but not seem to progress, they don't grow fruit/flowers and don't need watering etc, until the game is exited and restarted. Happened to me just last night, for several in game days the plants didn't show any change except declining quality, then after I exited and restarted the game all the plants had fruit on them and looked in bad need of watering.

In the case I mentioned earlier it's possible I did something that cleared this glitch, don't recall all the details, just assumed sunlight was required for gardening. And I recall that traveling away from the lot and back often clears glitches like this, I just tend to exit the game and restart to preventatively clear other glitches that I may not yet have seen happening.

I haven’t tried breaking the floor in the basement, because I do use planters there. Hope they will fix that for you, they do make changes on some things. Last I played my main sim all of her dragon fruit plants went back to soil from being fully grown in her greenhouse, she used to make good money off of them. I have some sims grow in basements and some grow upstairs ( attic ) and some grow in their apartments, but they all use planters. I haven’t played with these sims lately though. Been working on my sports sims going on vacation lately.
