A lot of times, I play a group of kids or teens from a neighborhood, so I don't want one of them to age up while the rest are still in school as they're all supposed to be in the same age group. So, I just age everyone up appropriately when I'm ready, including other family members. As for townies, if it's someone who has made it into my screenshots that I've used on my blog or just someone I've seen around town a lot or interacted with a lot, I'll edit and age them, too (or delete if they're already an elder). But, if I haven't really used them, then sometimes I let them stay the same age and just incorporate them into the next generation.
I also go into cas full edit mode and add some extra wrinkles to adults once their kids have reached the young adult stage just to keep everyone looking the age they're supposed to be.
