Agree with the first sentence, with a bit of potter &c. thrown in. As for the second, am personally more attuned to Medieval Europe than the 80's and quite at home with both Victorian and London. You may have answered your own comment, as the older venues more readily speak of magic and mystery, while the 80's vibe, as you said, feels more like cartoons to sell toys. I just saw the live broadcast video, and the gameplay version felt more like theatre, not magic.
