I think they could have slowly let the pollution leave the world. In StrangerVille and Island Living it just gradually changes (for better or worse) depending on the pack you are using.
I don't really like the machine to clean the pollution up. I am not an eco type person in rl, so maybe they have that in rl? (just don't touch my chocolates and diet coke and you'll be just fine ;) )
As far as reusing, it doesn't bother me.
