It’s really easy and fast to romance someone in this game (if you want to) - just look at the 100 baby challenge.
I’ve never seen evidence of preferences in my sims. If they’re there, they’re not strong enough to be obvious to me.
I don’t know how well “Ask to just be friends” works, because it hasn’t worked for a group of sims I have that dated through their school years and settled on one partner. They still have moments with their exes where autonomous flirting happens while I’m not controlling them. It has caused drama at weddings and parties. The one who was cheated on gets an angry moodlet and usually a hurt sentiment. But the relationship doesn’t take a huge hit and by the time I play that couple again, it’s like nothing happened (I play rotationally and the moodlet and sentiment have decayed by that time).
