The tricky part is when it involves serum. Either you need to drink it or to make it, worse you need to get it be tested first. I would say, make sure your Sims has invented the cloning machine (it will be very handy when you need to clone the materials and the serums). You can either grow, collect the materials or purchase it, then start cloning everything. If it is possible, bring back the cloning machine to your Sims house and perhaps create the serums at home (since you have the chemistry lab as a reward - make your own secret lab at home). Then later on, keep all the serums and materials in your Sims inventory before going to work. :D

Hope this helps! I have a lot of Scientist Sims and all are at the top level. I even have 1 Sims who's earning at least 15k per day (I get her to attend the Uni & making sure that she has an excellent performance at work even though she's already at the top level).
