Keep in mind Grant knows Seasons eps - he did Sims 2 Seasons - so I would not worry about it. He knows how we like Seasons and he didn't work on the game in Sims 1 - so he is very familiar to how a seasons ep goes. From my understanding the Maxis teams tells EA what they want to do and EA either approves it or not - not the other way around.
I still think it depends on the situation. Sometimes it can also depends on a direction EA is heading to. I remember an EA executive that overlooks DICE and that he didn't approved Battlefield WW1 theme, but DICE pushed it to the limits and even created a test game and it impressed the executive, which turned out to having Battlefield 1. Sometimes we saw EA to decide for all of their games to go online, having a multiplayer aspect, etc. And by that I don't think the studios have a choice.
