I haven't played much, but my sim got an "adoring" sentiment from reading his toddler to sleep. He is definitely happier in the presence of the toddler since.
His wife got one of the closer because they spent time together for both her husband and the toddler after opening presents with them at Winterfest.
The wife's daughter/husband's stepdaughter doesn't seem to matter to anyone yet, poor thing.
