That's not actually the "whole point" of marriage. There's far more to the concept of marriage, historically, then the notion of "commitment"...which ultimately is just about the uh..physical...aspects of the relationship.
Marriage also carries with it social and economic reasons, the division/sharing of labors, including child rearing, and much, much more. Most of these other aspects are actually enhanced with polygamous relationships.
I respectfully disagree with this sentiment. I think personally that a marriage is supposed to be between two people because having more than two can easily turn into a jealous heap of raw dysfunctional chaos.
If you feel that two people aren't enough in a relationship to handle the workload and finances or whatever, move in a friend or get a roommate. But being in a romantic entanglement typically doesn't end well for any of the people involved. That's my opinion on it.
