I don't think I've seen a single mermaid, unless they were 'disguised' (in which case, it doesn't matter - they were normal Sims in my game). My Sim did have a rabbit hole mermaid experience in the cave - she came out with a 'sad' moodlet from the siren's song and a whole bunch of mermadic kelp. (It's impossible to get rid of the stuff - you can't throw it away, sell it from your inventory, or even put it in the treasure chest. Maybe you can put it in the fridge, but I didn't want my Sims accidently eating it. I finally had to drag each of the ten bits of kelp from the inventory to the floor, go into build mode, and delete each bit.)
