Merfolk have lots of story telling potential. Because they are half-human, their stories can include all the elements with human characters, but their half-fish form allows their story to take place underwater.
Mermen, unlike mermaids, are regularly depicted with the ability to shapeshift. In some stories Mermen can take a human or water-horse (or normal horse appearance but races into the water and drowns the rider) form at will. Horses are said to be born from the ocean in greek mythology. This is just one gender difference that gets lost when merfolk gender gets ignored and mermen are called mermaids.
