I was wondering the same thing. That cabinet/shelf with the tea towels and hanging pots isn't a cabinet variant.... is it possible that EA has messed up (again) by accidentally showing an item from a not-yet-released-pack (again)? Is it possible that we have a country/farming pack coming out in March? :o

On second thought.... maybe that one mint coloured cabinet with the tea towels and hanging pots is another cabinet variant. It has the exact same shape as the other cabinet(s), so it probably is.
But that other mint shelf with the slots for plates I don't recognize and it's not shown in the catalogue? Is that from some other kitchen set I'm not aware of? Or is that an EA booboo? Or is it yet another cabinet variant?

Me too. But upon closer inspection of the pics you've posted I think my wishful thinking (hoping for a country/farming pack) is getting the better of me by way of trying to catch some kind of leaked hint in those pictures.... where there probably isn't any. LOL :D

Having made tiling patterns myself for CG art... yes. Yes I can. I've also modeled meshes in Hexagon, struggled with UV maps, and painted textures in GIMP. Not for the Sims, and very little of it is at a quality I'd consider distributing (though I have released some Daz Studio Iray Shader presets I was pretty proud of that got a mention in a blog about them.)
They farm out a lot of this work to other art companies, but that doesn't change that it is work they have to pay for.
I get that Kits bother you. And there's nothing wrong with being upset by them. But that doesn't diminish that there is work that goes into this, the models are more complicated than a "simple reskin" and quality tiling textures with accompanying bump and normal maps isn't just a matter of running a picture through a couple of filters.

There's just 15 items in it - all of them skins and non-functional clutter that the most noobish of skinners could create - whereas in a full Stuff Pack there's on average 60 items, sometimes as much as 70 - clothes, hair, lots of items, and something adding to gameplay. So that's a quarter of the size. They should be at most $2.50.
We don't even know what their other swatches will be. They might only have two or three, which is definitely not much effort for what is meant to be official work.

Kitchens are one of the hardest and and most tedious things to make for the sims. Because of how they chose to do them, by including every mesh shape variant into one mesh.
One standard kitchen counter is made up 10 unique meshes (even tho it only looks like one item, because all of the other meshes are "inside" of the main counter shape.
Then the texturing! ..... Nightmare! ....... all of the objects use the same textures .... there is one for the counter base and one for the countertop. And those meshes have to be unwrapped in a way that the common areas can share a texture space seemlessly so that there is no weird shadows or texture issues when you change the mesh from the main cabinet to a corner or whatever.
I can assure a lot of work goes into making cabinets and counters!
Counter = 10 Unique Meshes Counter Island = 7 Unique Meshes Upper Cabinets = 14 Unique Meshes - this object has a High LOD (Level of Detail) and a Medium LOD so it has more meshes
For every mesh you see, there is also a "Shadow Mesh" which is what makes the shape of the shadow on the wall, but that just uses the same meshes and some settings are changed for it.
