To offer a little perspective: there are also a LOT more gamers now than in 2000, and they're playing across three platforms instead of one. More importantly, though, the frequent origin sales lure in a LOT of people -- myself included, who tried it for $10 in June '18 -- who might not give it a chance otherwise. For my own personal playstyle, TS4 is awesome. Sure, I miss some things about TS3, but it NEVER held my time and attention the way TS4 does.
This is something else. I find it baffling that media still portraits gaming as an "odd hobby for introverts and geeks".
The gaming industry makes twice as much money as Hollywood every year. And far FAR more than comic books.
But more importantly over 50% of households with 40+ of age (without kids) have a modern (this or last generation PS or Xbox) gaming console. And that data was posted BEFORE Nintendo's immense success with the Switch. If you also count the cheap and easy to use Switch into the mix? Yeah. Only talking heads on TV and 70 year old Hollywood people think games are "odd" or "subculture" anymore.
(and if you add the households that have gaming-worthy PC's, or bought the playstation for their kids... again... yeah. And don't get me started on mobile games).
