It should be noted, I'm considering crafting an article for social media. I really think this needs attention called to it. I know it will get lost in these forums among the now clustered "chatter". The world is becoming a more tolerant place and for a game that's always been progressive, it's a shame to see it go back in time. The Sims has always been tolerant of sexuality, mixed races, inter-species dating (lol) and blended families. Not just the gay families, how many families have I had to repair because a Romantic Sim goes on a flirting spree? EA/Maxis, you're on notice. Someone needs to work overtime to fix this.
Well, if you feel that you must go that route, at least be honest and present it as faulty programming on EA/Maxis's part, especially since this issue affects both gays and straights in the game. It's really not a question of intolerance, even if you see it that way.
I agree about it's being the programming and not an outright social commentary. It's so clearly programming, but it's also blatant disregard. It's neglect. It's a horrible mistake someone should have caught. No one spoke up. No one said: Hey, Sims are flirting with everyone and this overrides sexual preference. Don't they have a QA department? It's intolerance because removing something that was always there and not thinking to put it back means it's not on their radar. It should be. It has to be. Did anyone speak up for the gay community? Considering what a big deal having gay couples in the game is (and always has been) I'm flabbergasted by this mistake. It's a doozy.
It goes both ways. It's not just a gay issue. Do I want my family man with 3 kids to flirt with every female Sim he runs into? I like flirty Sims, but it's out of control. I merely want the option to create Sims MY way. It would be nice if I could create Sims that stay in healthy realtionships, if I choose. Or not. It should be up to me. If I want a Sim that woo-hoos around, that's my choice.
Especially since at least Sims 3 seemed to handle this correctly (I'm not familiar enough with Sims 2 to be able to say how it was done in that game). Sims 3 absolutely seemed to have some sort of a 'memory' system there. I played a sim once who I made very unfaithful myself (it wasn't in his traits but he managed to get to the 'cheater' level). When I moved on to the next generation I often found daddy Elijah somewhere flirting with some woman, even though he was happily married at that point. Again, it wasn't in his traits. And always women, never men. Elijah wasn't into men when I controlled him and apparently not when I didn't. It is possible for them to create the game like that and I agree it most definitely is important. Things like that shouldn't be random.
