For me i was like that early in the game but at some point.....maybe after Generations? ......my Sims could be married or single and if I played a household it might be all changed if I went to another household and came back. It wasn't a complete change though. A single Sim might get married but still be living alone while her husband was in another house. A married couple might get divorced and have an outside romantic interest but still be living in the same house together. It was like the game was trying to have story progression but not really.
