I understand that this was a terrible blow to your story and in your place I probably would have exit without saving (or restarted, as you did). On the other hand this anecdote is good news to me. Because in my game I see lots of randomized pink bars assigned to sims that I was not actively playing for some time, but never once was there a same sex relationship. The game only ever coupled up sims of opposite genders, so naturally I believed it was hard-coded to only generate that kind of relationship. Glad to know it isn't a bad case of heteronormativism, but just an unfortunate oversight in the code.
On a sidenote I'm still under the impression that those pink bars just pop up randomly, because I never witness the autnomous flirting. In Sims 2 I can always put my finger on a relationship change, because the sims are either on their home lot or a community lot with precise borders. In the semi-open world of Sims 4 naturally one cannot have their eyes everywhere.
