I think it's important to show when you are happy and just leave a positive comment on twitter or on the forums. A simple "thank you" goes a long way...
I remember when I finished a game (Mafia 3 by Hangar 13) a couple of years ago, I went to the developers twitter page and said "thank you" and that I liked the game. The developers responded back that they were very happy to hear it. I know a lot of people had criticized the game, but I liked it.
