No matter our opinions, TS4 will end when Maxis discovers or builds an engine they think is the best thing ever, or a platform EA wants them to use. It won't matter if TS4 is selling like no tomorrow..so was TS3, probably if truth known, TS3 was probably out selling TS4 the first year and was consider over. I said that to make this point, this game will not go on forever, nor will it last ten years or probably not as long as TS3 did.
It stands to reason if they find a new engine to buy, or come up with one on their own, or if EA decides it needs to move on over to different and new platforms then TS4 will suffer the same fate as the rest of them...shelved. It won't matter if it's making money or not. Once EA makes up their mind it's time to move on to a different format and platform that is what will happen. It doesn't matter how many times they say they will continue to make DLC as long as Simmers are interested...they have said that four times already, every time. It doesn't hold water. New technology to develop games will make TS4 end just like it did for The Sims, The Sims 2, The Sims 3...it won't matter at all.
ETA: And if anyone believes they haven't been tossing around ideas or development(Sim game) for anything new over at Maxis then I have a bridge for sale. :D
I don't know. I think EA kind of plans to really milk the heck out of Sims 4, rather than going for Sims 5. And then they'll blame it on poor sales. I mean, they just zeroed in on the console crowd now. Whole new audience to milk.
Problem with making a Sims 5, is that it needs to be better than Sims 4 - as in, bigger and more powerful, not actually BETTER. At this moment, just what would that mean? THe question they'll instinctively ask is, will they make more money from starting work on the basic Sims 5 (which would be gut-bustingly expensive to create) than by bringing out more packs for Sims 4? The answer is, not yet. Perhaps in the future, but Sims 4 is a cow with too much milk in it yet. There's Seasons, more vacations, every supernatural state, some kind of superstar pack, more kinds of pets, more jobs... all of these packs sell well, and then they'll be interspersed with Stuff Packs.
