Yeah you really need to make an effort to get fired in the Sims 4. I have personally never experienced a sim getting fired in this game but they used to get fired more often in previous games, many times without me really doing it on purpose.
But it was pretty fun to have them be unemployed and struggling for a while, or they could just easily get the same job again and start a little lower on the career ladder I think.
