sims don't sleep when one is away

it's always frustrated me that when one sim is out of the house, the sims still at home don't sleep. like??? why?? they'll be on the "care for self" setting, so why don't they sleep to fill their energy need?

i'll have one sim come home at one in the morning to a bunch of their family feeling uncomfortable because they couldn't sleep.

i can't be the only one this annoys, right?

  • Ok, will this work, when one Sims is out and the other sims are having problems, just switch control to a sim that's at home, put everyone to bed. Now switch back to the sim that outside of the home.
Just like we do in Sims 3 except its a loading screen.

Unfortunately, no - I tried that with my home-alone kid, and she jumped out of bed again when I went back to Sixam.
  • I was never one to use cheats like Make Happy. In Sims2, I used that energizer machine. In Sims3, I used a mod that slowed time and was able to have my singer Sim take a nap prior to his concerts and this mod allowed him to get there on time, too. Prior to it, he was always late. Now, I have to 'fix' the needs of those in the household left behind when I follow a Sim to work. The poor mother of twins had four out of her six needs in the red when her brother got back from his concert. Same when her husband got back from the Science lab. What is up with that? I will now have to taylor the way I play so that I only follow either of these gents to their professions every other Sim day. So much for them getting ahead in their careers. Face/palm. I used to bounce back and forth in Sims3, with these kind of jobs anytime one of the icons of a family member went the wrong color. I would queue up to fix their needs and then return to the one at work. This iteration however, blinks the icon of the one you followed to work, initially, with an insistence that is hard to ignore. How rude!

I usually end up having to click on care for self even though it's already on there now and again so they will actually do it.
  • Sims left at home do not do anything at home when you are on a different lot with a member of the household.

The only thing that happens it that the game checks each Sim for their lowest motive and starts to fill this motive. This will (expect for the motive fun) go on until the motive is completely filled. As it is a very slow process (expect for Bladder which goes up rather fast), your Sim will probably have several motives in the red before the first motive is at 100 %.
On top of that, the game will sometimes "forget" to chose a new motive to fill once the first one is filled, resulting in all motives decaying and none of them getting fix.
The problem can be decreased by clicking on care for self every once in a while, esp. when you notice that another motive is going in the red.
Worst of it is the situation when you leave your homelot while other Sims are at work or school. This will (a bug since the release of the game that has never been fixed) lead to those Sims not taking care for any of their needs at all, except you choose an action that fills a certain motive (like meet friends at school which will lower the social need or working lazy that will increase fun). The point is that in such a situation, neither the default away actions nor the default at work actions work, so Sims will not eat or pee at work/school which they normally do.
You can decrease that problem by making sure that all motives except fun and social are green when your Sims leave for work/school.

This is actually one of my biggest complaints concerning TS4. I don't even expect my Sims doing stuff while I'm not controlling them but I expect EA to at least choose a sensible way/order to fill their needs.
