Sims for Men

I noticed The Sims 4 became very girlie. I don't remember the previous versions being so girlie. I picked up my first Sims game because it was an amazing game to build houses. I don't know if it was CC content I used then that made the game less girlie. But now I'm playing on a console so there is no way to add CC stuff. So I have to stick with what EA has to offer but most of the packs are so women orientated and that's weird in 2021it's even borderline conservatism. I haven't build one family and do not intend to build a family.

When I look at how many playstation friends have this game I was shocked how many of them own the Sims game. I never see them play it but they owned the game one time or another. I think EA is alienating men who want to play the sims with all the women centric content. And for those who don't understand where I'm coming from. Rest assured I don't want want guns in the game or a GI Joe themed pack o:)

I leave the original post untouched so new readers understand the answers that followed better.

The part that I want to clarify is the wording 'girlie" and "for women". My native tongue is not English so I'm not always using the correct language which sometimes can sound offensive. With girlie I meant "directed to teenagers" and "for woman" should have been 'domestic tasks"

Nothing is 'manly' as that sets the expectation that ONLY men can do it.

@Rosysimmer Of course not but we are talking about things that men are more likely to be doing because there are certain things out there that attract a male audience more than female.
For example: ever been to a school for programming and computers? All you see there is dudes. It doesn't mean there are no women or that they aren't allowed to be interested in programming and computers. It's just that typically more men want to study IT programming for some reason. So calling it a more "man-thing" is actually pretty accurate.

It's not about who is allowed to do what. Of course everyone is allowed to do anything they want to. But there are just certain things that attract certain genders.

I'd hate to sound agressive but sorry not sorry, I've graduated from the top STEM program here and the female/male ratio is around 1:1 in almost every field.

@Bastet It was just an example, please don't come for me it's just an example. It's how it is in the country I live in and it could be different elsewhere but it was just an example.
  • I work in a male dominated field and it doesnt bother me that people associate my work with men. If the Sims came out with an industry pack aimed at attracting male simmers with trucking, driving lifts and other warehouse machines it wouldnt be offensive in the slightest... Id be happy to have more careers / activities. Ive worked with plenty of female colleagues but its majority men.
  • @Bastet - No worries. I didn't think you were aggressive, but I did want to interject that your experience isn't the case everywhere. As @StrawberryYogurt said above, some industries are full of mostly men. I worked for the government on large teams of engineers making upgrades to airports. There was only one other woman who worked on one of those teams, we didn't even get to work together and only knew each because we were hired on the same day.

I would really appreciate more industry jobs. I don't even care if they're jobs that are more suited for men, I would be very happy to have more normal job options in the game. Most of my sims currently work in construction or retail...as is the case in real life.

Rather than “girly” I’d prefer to call some of these manners effeminate, although virtually they mean the same thing.

It’s fine if being flamboyant is a characteristic of that specific sim, but these guys shouldn’t all be treated the same way.

I always loved the introduction of walk styles, however I feel that a sim’s manner and movement should go beyond just that. Perhaps it’s asking for a lot, but it would give our sims so much more of that character and personality we’ve been hoping to see.

I play traditional, straight males so I either give them the tough walk or the swagger walk, but that’s where the expression of their manner also kinda stops, doesn’t it? The moment my “tough” dude sits on the sofa he crosses his legs. Why? That’s not the kind of guy he is...he’d take over the whole couch with his presence. Both legs miles apart.

There’s no need for it to be super exaggerated, but details like this would make such a huge difference.

That's what I think the OP is talking about, how all the sims act the same, regardless of their sex, which tends to be a more feminine response/reaction to a lot of things.

And I agree, it is jarring to have a heterosexual straight male who walks tough and swaggerish, all of a sudden have mostly traditionally feminine gestures, animations, and reactions to things.

It would have been so much better if the "walk style" dictated more how the sim behaved animation-wise .... ie: swagger walk = manly man, tough guy actions, feminine walk = flirty, girly hand fluttery type actions, goofy walk = goofball actions and responses, etc.

Or better yet, they could have just made all actions, responses, and animations be totally neutral and non-gender geared.

    But, that's just my opinion.

But that's also because animators are expensive and they don't want to hire them as well. TS4 is just a low budget game. They use recycled animations for everything and every sim acts the same for that reason.

That’s true, animators are very expensive, but teasing us with walk styles that give our sims character and rendering half of that redundant by using the same animations on each and every sim no matter what kinda person they are doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, especially when talking about a life sim. Its a shame really.

Here ye want cookies with cream? There ya go, good boy, now give that back and let me take out the cream.” ??‍♂️

Actually many games use stock animation just as they use stock models from sites like DAZ Studios which has basic animations for free and stock models for free that can be bridged over to other programmes like 3ds Max and Maya to save time. So animators really aren't needed except to tweak and clean up stock animations in a video game. It's why we see animations being reused a lot in the game vs seeing new animations.

It's something I remember my professors saying when I was learning 3d modelling and animation. I was interested in making video games as much as film. film won out because of learning how some gaming companies are. Unlike with film where stock animation and stock models may be used but not so often. Also in video games, lower poly models and materials are baked on this is used to speed up everything vs when I make a short where I can have my computer sit and render a few minutes of animation for a week or two. I use high poly models when making a commercial or a short because unlike a video game I don't have to worry about somebody's computer crashing, freezing and lagging and getting mad because of it. I have more allotted time to make a commercial, short or ad and more often than not I add extra time for projects so I have plenty of time and don't need to resort to stock models and stock animations.

  • For me it's not about being woman or man oriented. Honestly I don't even know what do you mean by that since The Sims is a life simulation and you can do every thing you want!

One thing is sure, The Sims 4 is more childish and family friendly and maybe that's what the problem is.
