Allow me to necro this ancient forum. This post is dedicated to all us nerds who still kill the occasional weekend with this great game.
This issue is caused by something we can't really see in the game. There is no "health meter" so to speak, but it's there. Sickness happens when your sim is doing one of several possible unhealthy things on a regular basis. If you never exercise, always eat the same things, don't drink enough tea/juice, and hang around other sick people (or people who are around sick people; doctors) you will find your sim eventually getting sick a lot.
It doesn't happen right away (when starting a new game) but after a while it will start to occur and not go away until you change your habit(s). It especially plum when you have more than one person in the house, because if one gets sick everyone does and it can be hard to cure them all at once before one can get another (that you just cured) sick again.
To stop this: You need to exercise, eat a variety of foods, avoid sick people, reduce stress, socialize, enjoy the outdoors, etc. Basically you need to just do a variety of healthy/positive things for your sim. People often play the game like their sims are slaves, doing nothing but work and chores everyday and this brings your "health meter" down.
I discovered this when i made an athletic sim who exercised all the time and drank a lot of tea/juice. He was a foodie who ate all sorts of different foods, and he was very social and partied with his friends a lot. I enjoyed the outdoor camping expansion a lot with him. Dude barely went to work, always maxed out his vacation days, total slacker. But he was healthy and never ran into this sickness issue. My work-a-holic tech guru however, ran into this issue only a couple weeks in and just got sick every day no matter how much medicine I made her take. She never recovered. I just ignored it after a while.
Moral of the story is; it's not a bug. Just treat your sims like fun playable characters and don't stick them in unhealthy routines. It's not a "bad mechanic", in fact it's one of the most realistic parts of the game.
Reminder: getting sick happens occasionally no matter how careful you are. If you are doing the above and still getting sick a lot chances are you have a sick co-worker/friend you are in contact with a lot. It will go away in time.
That's pretty coolt actually. I always thought that sickness was random :open_mouth:
