I was considering posting this, I think it's a great video which explains how the game works.
As for if you should get a better computer, I think he is right that you need a good CPU to avoid simulation lag, the minimum recommendation that they have on the sims4 page (an Intel Core 2 Duo) is way too outdated.
Other things probably matter as well, but I can confirm that I am not seeing much simulation lag on my gaming desktop PC.
