Not gonna lie, part of me hopes this is the best selling SP so far, just for the laughs.
Yeah, there is certainly much laughter/excitement to be found in the disappointment of others.

Yes, of course. When a pack sells so well that it breaks records, it's a sad, terrible, funeral like affair, and in no way boosts the game overall, lead to potentially more resources for future packs, or anything of the sort.
Because, you know, Cats & Dogs didn't put Sims 4 on the public map again or anything. :p
What are you talking about? C&D is the best selling EP for Sims 4, but what records did it break?
The game has reportedly been doing just fine for awhile now. If EA were going to put more money into Sims 4 they aren’t going to do it after they release a highly anticipated pack that they knew would sell. If anything they saw that they could sell a pack that added the bare minimum. Barely any toys, barely any beds, dogs can’t even sleep on Sim beds, there’s a handful of interactions between sim and pet (not including the standard socials which are applicable to everyone), no small pets. Assuming they are going to put more money into this game that they have actively cut funding for is just unrealistic.
What records did it break? It's the best selling pack for the Sims 4? :D Pretty sure that's a record right there. It was enough for EA and Maxis to make a big deal about it, considering how seldom they talk about sales and such for the game. I think you're underestimating the impact of it. As for the rest, you're just letting your jaded side color your words, so it's whatever.
When a pack sells well, the game it's attached to always gets a boost. Maybe it's just all profit. Maybe resources go back into the teams. Maybe the EP team gets a boost (or other incentives like bonuses in their paychecks or something). But there is an impact, somewhere. Doesn't matter if you like the pack that sold. That's just personal preference.
By extension, if the new small pet SP sells well, the SP team will undoubtedly get a boost. Who knows what that will lead to?
